The SNMP protocol was initiated by theIETF(Internet Engineering Task Force) at the end of the 80s. It was competitor of the network administration solution of the ISO(International Organization for Standardization) CMIS/CMIP(Common Management Information Service/Protocol).

The SNMP protocol has largely supplanted the ISO protocol. Even the attempt to converge the ISO solution on IP networks through the CMOT(CMIP over TCP) protocol was a resounding failure. Thus, even if at the beginning the IEFT and ISO specifications were more or less the same, in the end the techniques implemented were different.

SNMP is a protocol allowing the administration and supervision of LANs (local area networks), extended to WANs (wide area networks) at the initiative of network equipment manufacturers such as Cisco, HP, 3Com/Bridge.

SNMP defines the format of packets exchanged between a manager and an agent.

It reads and modifies the status of objects (variable values) in SNMP packets.

This protocol allows :

  • Collect information on the equipment connected to the network in a standardized way
  • Detect network problems by interrogation or alarm feedback
  • Modify the configuration of the equipment
  • Monitor network and equipment performance
  • Establish metrics
